About the tour

Berlin is a city where history has a way of following you around. Especially so on this walk from Brandenburg Gate to Potsdamer Platz. We will first learn out about the Brandenburg Gate's history and its significance to German history. Martin will then take you across the Holocaust Memorial and get to hear about the symbolism and history behind it. Continuing along the trail of the infamous Berlin Wall, we'll also pass by the Memorial to the Murdered Gays until we reach Potsdamer Platz, which, over the course of its nearly 200 year old history, went from hub to wasteland and back to hub again!

Meet your local guide

Having experienced the fall of The Wall first hand, Martin lived abroad between 1994 and 2010, first in London and later in Paris. He later went back to studying, gaining an MA and PhD in the UK. After completing his PhD dissertation on German-Jewish exile organisations that emerged as a result of the rise to power by the Nazis, he was then offered to contribute to the exhibition “Eichmann on Trial”, organised by Berlin’s Topography of Terror. And so, Martin was back in Berlin, re-discovering the city he'd left so long ago. Fascinated by Berlin’s total make-over since he left some 16 years earlier, he decided to turn his rekindled fascination with Berlin into his profession. He has since obtained his official certificate that classifies him as a fully licenced Berlin Tour Guide.

Martin has been guiding since May 2011
