About the tour

Few Berlin districts manage to encapsulate the flavour and the essence of the "old West Berlin". It's not so much that Charlottenburg hasn't changed -because it has - but it's about the many things and institutions that haven't, and which have remained an integral part of the city, among them the Delphi Theatre, the theatre formerly known as the Theatre of the West, the world famous Paris Bar and, of course, the Emperor William Memorial Church. But on top of these Berlin mainstays, there are quite a few interesting additions, such as the Helmut Newton Foundation, the C/O Gallery, or the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Come and join me on this 50min trip which takes you back in time and straight into the present!

Martin

Having experienced the fall of The Wall first hand, Martin lived abroad between 1994 and 2010, in London, Paris, Bath, and Birmingham. Going back to studying late in his life, he then gained an MA with Distinction from Bath University and a PhD from the prestigious University of Warwick, writing his dissertation on German-Jewish exile organisations that emerged as a result of the rise to power by the Nazis. Following his graduation, he was then offered to contribute to the exhibition “Eichmann on Trial”, organised by Berlin’s Topography of Terror. And so, Martin was back in Berlin, re-discovering the city he had left so long ago. Fascinated by Berlin’s total make-over since he left some 16 years earlier, he decided to turn his rekindled fascination with Berlin into his profession. He has since obtained his official certificate that classifies him as a fully licenced Berlin Tour Guide.

Martin has been guiding since May 2011

Martin is so knowledgeable but trip spoilt by screen freezing and photographs taking 5 minutes to load.

Another great tour with Martin:) His knowledge of Berlin is remarkable and he shows us fascinating places. Sometimes, though, he points out places that have a great deal of sadness associated with them. Today it was the site of the terrorist attack on the Christmas market in 2015 (I think this is correct). I remember this. It is a wonderful way the victims have been remembered. Martin pointed out another place today that really grabbed my attention: a building that serves as both living quarters and studio spaces for artists and their families. What a unique idea. As someone who loves the arts, I really enjoyed hearing about it.
