About the tour

Join your guide for a walk along the seafront in St Peter Port, starting from the Liberation Monument celebrating 50 years of freedom. See where half the population were evacuated from, hear about the monuments to remember the fallen and see where the liberating forces landed after 5 long years of occupation. Hear your guides' personal family accounts of these times. Walk through the fascinating cobbled streets, steps and alleyways and soak up the history. Walk past the medieval harbour and see where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert arrived on a surprise visit. Find out more about these special islands, with their own Parliament and not part of the UK, originally French but now British, a lovely combination of both French and British heritage.

Gill

Gill was born in Guernsey and has lived here for most of her life, working in the hospitality industry and for the last 20 years as a tour guide. She is passionate about her island and loves talking to people about the fascinating history. She has family who were there throughout the occupation in the Second World War and some who were evacuated so has many family anecdotes to pass on. She was also the tour guide who helped the film crew research the very successful film of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society book, a film about the occupation.

Gill has been guiding since May 2000

This was a great first tour. I had seen the movie, and my mom had read the book. So we were excited to learn more about Guernsey. It looks like such a lovely island. I’m excited for the upcoming tour about Victor Hugo and his time in Guernsey.
