About the tour

What is more traditional than ice skating in the Netherlands? Due to climate change, it is very rare that we can skate on natural ice in Amsterdam. Only 2 times in the last 12 years it was cold enough to skate on the canals. Now in February, there will be a cold snap, which means that we can skate on the ice for a few days. That is unique. Join me on the ice on one of the most famous canals in Amsterdam. Learn about our skating culture and see how Amsterdammers come out en masse to try out the ice. **Unfortunately, it has not been cold enough in Amsterdam in recent days. The ice in the canals is not thick enough and it is dangerous to skate or walk on the ice. This means that we make an alternative 'canals of Amsterdam' tour through one of the most beautiful parts of the city. **

Meet your local guide

Stephan

Stephan is a real Dutchie, he was born in Delft (the city of Vermeer), grown up in Gouda (the cheese city), studied in Leiden (city of Rembrandt) and he lived in Rotterdam (the harbour city) before moving to our capital Amsterdam in 2006. After a career in technology as an Online Strategist, he decided to leave behind the corporate world to start guiding visitors of Amsterdam and started his own private tour agency, Amsterdam Experiences. He found out that walking and cycling around the city with international visitors is a lot more fun than a desk job! As a host, Stephan loves to show his virtual guests, the hidden gems in Amsterdam through the eyes of a local. He has a passion for telling stories about Dutch history and culture. So join him on the bike or by foot, and see the highlights of Amsterdam.

Stephan has been guiding since Jul 2016

Why are they tip-supported?

We are running these tours on a tip-supported basis to make them as accessible as possible. They are free to book and join, but you have the option to tip the guide during the tour.
